The Firefly and the Snake: Why You Don't Have to Fight Every Battle

You may have heard this story before. It is a beautiful story with a very deep lesson. Even if you have heard it, listen to it again today—because perhaps you have only heard the snake's answer, and never the firefly's answer.

And believe me, that is where the real meaning of the story begins.

The Chase

A snake was chasing a firefly.

After being followed for quite some time, the firefly realised that someone was behind him. He turned around and saw a snake chasing him.

The firefly stopped and said to the snake, "Brother, can I ask you two or three questions?"

The snake replied, "Yes, go ahead."

The firefly asked the first question: "Am I part of your food?"

The snake said, "No."

The firefly asked another question: "Alright, then have I ever harmed you in any way?"

The snake replied, "No."

Then the firefly asked the third question: "If I am neither your food nor have I ever harmed you, then why are you chasing me? Why do you want to kill me?"

The snake replied, "You are absolutely right. You have never harmed me. You are not my food either. But there is one problem with you…"

The firefly asked, "What is it?"

The snake said, "You shine… and I cannot stand seeing you shine."

The Snakes Among Us

And that is exactly the point.

In our lives too, there are many such "snakes" around us. We have done nothing to hurt them. We do not wish them harm. Yet they cannot bear to see us moving forward, succeeding, and shining. Their problem is not with what we do—it is with who we are. Our light exposes their darkness, and they cannot tolerate it.

The Firefly's Answer

But the story does not end there.

When the firefly heard the snake's answer, he smiled and said, "Let it be, my friend… You cannot defeat me."

The snake angrily asked, "Why can't I defeat you?"

And then the firefly gave an answer worth remembering.

The firefly said, "Because I am not even on the battlefield against you. I have no competition with you."

"You go around biting people, while I may offer only a tiny light—but I bring light into the darkness. You do your work, and I will do mine. So how can there be a competition between us?"

"And when I am not even standing on the same battlefield as you, how can you defeat me?"

The snake fell silent.

But the firefly had one more thing to say: "You cannot take away my light either."

The snake angrily asked, "Why can't you take it away?"

The firefly replied, "Because this light was given to me by my Lord. If He wishes to take it away, He can do so in a moment. But no one else has the power to take away the light He has given me—or the dignity He has bestowed upon me—without His will."

The Greatest Lesson

That is the greatest lesson of this story.

Not every challenge needs a fight. Not every opposition deserves an explanation. And you do not have to fight every snake you encounter.

Sometimes, the strongest response is simply to refuse to enter their battlefield.

Focus on your own light.

Because your job is not to fight the snakes. Your job is to keep shining.

The firefly never needed to prove anything to the snake.
It simply continued to glow.
And in doing so, it fulfilled its purpose—
not by defeating darkness, but by being light.

So it is with you.
Your light is not a provocation. It is a gift.
Let it shine.
